On April 19, 2024, the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies at Mahidol University, in conjunction with the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand and the Active (Social and Policy Engagement Team) from Thai PBS, convened a public seminar titled “Exanimating Rape Culture and Women’s Rights Protection Mechanism” via Zoom Meeting and Facebook Live. Distinguished panelists of the event included: Ms. Kunnika Charoenrak, the Director of the Division of Gender Equality Promotion at the Department of Women’s Affairs and Family Development, delivered an insightful discourse on “the Myth of Gender and Gender Violence Situations in Thai Society”; Ms. Pornratra Wachirachai, a Researcher and Independent Writer, shared on “How Rape Culture Silences and Aggravates Rape Survivors”; Mr. Chanintr Ketupratch, the Deputy Secretary-General of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand, delved into the intricate “Rape Report Mechanism in Thai Authoritarian and Patriarchal Government Agencies”; and Professor Dr. Nongyao Nawarat, former Gender Discrimination Committee member and Applicant of the 2024 Thai Senatorship, eloquently addressed the “Challenges and Opportunities to Enhance Rights Protection Mechanism for Survivors of Rape and Gender Discrimination.
The online session was moderated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Duanghathai Buranajaroenkij from the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, alongside Ms. Aruchita Utamapokin from the Active team. Dr. Vachararutai Boontinand, the Director of the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, concluded the session with closing remarks.
