Looking Back and Looking Forward, From Community to Policy: Twenty Years of Southern Border Violence—Challenges and the Next Steps for the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies in Sustainable Peacebuilding

24 September 2024—The Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies (IHRP) at Mahidol University, in collaboration with the Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia (RILCA) and the Institute for Population and Social Research (IPSR), held an academic seminar titled “Looking Back and Looking Forward, From Community to Policy: Twenty Years of Southern Border Violence—Challenges and the Next Steps for the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies in Sustainable Peacebuilding” at IPSR.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Padtheera Narkurairattana led discussions on the university’s ongoing research and academic service projects aimed at peacebuilding in Thailand’s deep south. Dr. Mirinda Burarungrot from RILCA presented the Patani Malay-Thai Multilingual Education Programme, while Dr. Suphatmet Yunyasit, Dr. Pholdham Sianmekhun Chancome, and Mr. Ghazalee Awae shared insights into various peacebuilding projects spearheaded by IHRP. These include the dialogues Between stakeholders, such as Religions for Peace and the Revitalization of Abandoned Buddhist Communities initiatives.

Commenting on the presented projects, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suchada Thaweesit highlighted the importance of sustainability, practicality, and feasibility in achieving long-term peace in the region.
In the afternoon session, Dr. Pholdham Sianmekhun Chancome and Mr. Ghazalee Awae facilitated a focus-group dialogue to discuss strategic plans for future collaboration in peacebuilding efforts in the deep south of Thailand, emphasizing Mahidol University’s commitment to promoting sustainable peace and development in the area.
