Print PDF

The Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies Master of Arts Human Rights International Program held a joint "Democratization Intensive" with the University of Sydney Master of Human Rights and Democratization (MHRD) program from 5-10 January 2015. The intensive explored how the right to democracy is promoted and protected in the Asia Pacific region. It focused on what organizations, parties, people, and stakeholders do to improve and increase the level of democracy at local and national levels. Relevant issues to democracy in the Asia Pacific such as gender, minorities, and election monitoring were discussed in-depth. Students gained an understanding of why democracy is seen as an important political configuration, as well as applying knowledge, gained from the course, of ways in which democracy can be supported through practical activities.

Students engaged in discussion with Dr. Pusadee Tamthai
from the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority.

On Thursday December 11, 2014 the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies (IHRP) at Mahidol University held the event "Human Rights During the State of Emergency". This event was part of the IHRP's "Human Rights: Article by Article" seminar series which aims to enable public discussions on the relevant international human rights standards and their application in the Thai context.

Representatives from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, International Commission of Jurists, and Thai Lawyers for Human Rights.

Representatives from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights,
International Commission of Jurists, Thai Lawyers for Human Rights, and Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies.

This most recent seminar in the series was attended by approximately 50 participants, including a number of Thai news outlets as well as three uniformed soldiers from a military unit stationed in the Puttamonthon area. The presenters included representatives from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, International Commission of Jurists and Thai Lawyers for Human Rights. They shared concerns about the human rights situation in Thailand, particularly after the coup d'etat and the enforcement of Martial Law in May 2014. The main areas of concern focused on the escalation of arbitrary arrests and detention, land rights, the right to a fair trial, and the use of Military Courts to try civilians.
